TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – A 14-year-old male student has been taken into custody and faces four criminal charges after a handgun he brought to school discharged.

The incident happened about 12:45 p.m. Friday at Robert Stuart Middle School, according to Twin Falls city spokesman Joshua Palmer.

The gun went off inside a classroom with other students and at least one teacher, he said. It is not believed the gun was aimed at anyone, but how it discharged is still being determined. Palmer said police are working with witnesses and investigating further details of the incident.

He said the student faces multiple charges including unlawful possession of a firearm; altering the serial number of a firearm; possessing a firearm on school property; and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Parents were notified this afternoon by an emergency alert from the Twin Falls School District that a gun had accidentally discharged, but that there were no injuries. The gun was turned over to authorities. There was no additional threat to students or faculty, the district said.
