After a couple days of heavy rain, the Payette River is rising and now at minor flood stage.  Record high temperatures earlier this week have given way to heavy rain, and that’s led to a flood warning for the Payette River. The water levels of the Payette River were around 9.6 feet Thursday afternoon. The river is expected to crest at a little over 12 feet today.  That level doesn’t cause too much concern, but if it gets worse, the city of Emmett might have a few problems to deal with.  Bruce Evans with Emmett Public Works is watching the river closely.

The first confirmed case of mad cow disease in the U.S. in six years has shown up in California.  Officials are still investigating how the dairy cow contracted the disease. The government is stressing there is no threat to human health because no meat from the animal was ever headed for the food supply. The cow was already dead and since it was a dairy cow, the infected animal does not pose a health hazard according to the government.  Scientists say milk does not transmit the disease. It only hurts humans when an infected animal’s meat is eaten.

The students in the welding classes at the College of Southern Idaho have been concerned for the past two weeks if they would actually be able to get their certification upon graduation.  The two certified welding instructors at CSI, Kent Parish and Juan Martinez,  have been on paid administrative leave since early this month.

Twin Falls County officials are afraid that the China Mountain Wind Project in southern Twin Falls County might be a dead issue now.  The Times News reports today that NV Energy, a Nevada utility company, had been working with RES Americas to build the 170 turbine wind farm in the China Mountain area but that company recently announced its decision to pull out of the project.

(AP) – The state Board of Education is gathering input from the public on a campaign to double the number of Idaho adults between the ages of 25 and 34 with a college degree or certificate. Trustees are expected to review the Complete College Idaho plan at a June meeting. Board spokeswoman Marilyn Whitney says trustees will first accept public comments through May 15.
