What are the most expensive things most Americans own? My guess would be that they own a house and a car. And most houses have a garage to protect the car. Yet many houses use the garage to store junk instead. Why?

My car is maybe worth $5,000. And all the junk in the garage combined is not worth even close to that. Plus we have two cars - so $10,000

I'm guilty of this. I'll throw stuff in the garage when I'm done using it but think I'll need it again soon or I'll throw it in there because I don't know where else to put it. As a result my car paint is faded and the inside is hot in the summer and the doors are usually iced over in the winter. I could fix this problem by just parking in the garage.

I've even cleaned out the garage many times with the intent of parking in there and it never lasts very long before something much less expensive takes the spot of my car.
