Health District: Flooding Can Cause Unforeseen Problems

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)  – In light of flooding happening in many parts of the region, South Central Public Health District is warning residents to be aware of potential health hazards due to the water problems.

One of those problems: mold.

“We are starting to receive calls from the public related to flooded wells and failed septic systems,” said health district spokesman Jeff Pierson. “Excessive water can seep into residential wells leading to contamination.

“Similarly, septic systems are failing because of surface water infiltrating septic systems and drain fields. While the obvious solution is to prevent wells and drain fields from becoming water collection points, that isn’t always possible.”

Pierson said crawl spaces and basements can be problem areas because they lack good ventilation. Once moisture collects in these areas, “it doesn’t take long for mold to grow.”
