With the Olympics starting in a few weeks, we're hearing a lot about the Zika virus thanks to the huge problem it's become in South America. But, what's the situation in the US and Idaho? It's good news for us, so far.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Idaho is one of the only states that has no reported cases of the Zika virus. Wyoming, North and South Dakota are the only other states that can make that claim.

According to the stats, Zika is spreading to our surrounding states by people who are coming in contact with it through travel. Here's the breakdown from the CDC:

  • Locally acquired mosquito-borne cases reported: 0
  • Travel-associated cases reported: 819
  • Laboratory acquired cases reported:  1
  • Total: 820
    • Sexually transmitted: 11
    • Guillain-Barré syndrome: 4

I don't know what Guillain-Barre syndrome is and I don't care enough to look it up. But, I can understand the "travel-associated cases" part enough to know that you need to be educated before you travel abroad this summer.

Here's hoping that we can keep Idaho grey on that map above meaning no Zika here.
