BOISE, Idaho (KLIX) The federal attorney in Idaho is cracking down on restaurants that may not be providing properly access to people with disabilities.

The Office of U.S. Attorney for the state says they are reviewing two restaurants, one in Coeur d'Alene and Nampa, to make sure they are abiding by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).

The office says it hasn't taken action because of any specific complaints. U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson says it comes from the congressionally-mandated responsibility to ensure compliance with ADA.  The office did not specifically name the restaurants by name.

Restaurants are required by federal law to build or alter their establishments to comply with ADA. As part of the review process the U.S. Attorney's office has asked owners to complete a survey about their restaurants' accessibility. The eateries could get a visit by investigators to check on how accessible they are. A restaurant is usually given time to make changes if they are not ADA compliant. However, if nothing is done, a civil lawsuit could be filed.

“People with disabilities who visit, work, or live in Coeur d’Alene and Nampa deserve to have an equal opportunity to enjoy restaurants in these cities, as the ADA requires,” said Olson.  “Our goal is to work with restaurant owners to bring them into compliance, so that all their potential patrons have access.”
