We don't lack for things to do here. When you factor in all the potential outdoor activities, you would think that Idaho would be a great retirement destination. If you're thinking about retiring here, you might want to think again especially if you're considering early retirement.

AOL ranked the 50 states by how they support the lifestyle of early retirees such as:

  • Effective income tax rates on people age 55-64.
  • State and local sales tax rates.
  • Average effective property tax rates.
  • Median annual housing costs.
  • Non-housing cost of living.
  • Average annual cost of a silver health insurance plan.

How did Idaho do? Don't look for us in the top 10. Or, the top 20.

Idaho landed at a very middle-of-the-road #22 thanks to a higher-than-average effective tax rate for people of early retirement age.

There is a tiny bit of good news in all of this. According to this map, Rupert is listed as one of the most tax-friendly places in the Magic Valley and Idaho overall is ranked as tax-friendly.
