Pediatricians Say Trampolines Are Dangerous

Actually, we all know that trampolines can be dangerous. Most of us have jumped through the sides, dodged flying springs, fell off the edge, and all sorts of other accidents that would be great for airing on America’s funniest Home Videos. But despite all the obvious dangers, doctors still feel the need to remind us of them.
- An updated policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that the risks of trampolines outweigh the benefits.
- “Families need to know that many injuries occur on the mat itself, and current data do not appear to demonstrate that netting or padding significantly decrease the risk of injury,” said Dr. Michele LaBotz.
- In 2009, there were 98,000 trampoline-related injuries with 3,100 resulting in hospitalization. 75% of these injuries occurred when there was only one person using the trampoline.
