MERIDIAN, Idaho (AP) — Meridian police say they're investigating after a man shot at a pit bull that was attacking his dog — and the bullet also hit the pit bull's owner.

Investigators said it happened at about 5:45 p.m. Saturday. They report that a 31-year-old woman was walking the pit bull when it broke free and charged toward the man and his dog. The dog owners tried to separate the animals, but when the pit bull tried again to attack the other dog, the man pulled a gun and fired.

He killed the pit bull, but the bullet passed through the animal and struck the woman in the abdomen as she continued trying to separate the dogs. The woman was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury. Meridian police say they're investigating whether either party should face charges.
