ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Elko police say they're investigating the possible attempted murder of an officer after a patrol car was hit by apparent gunfire over the weekend.

Elko Police Chief Ben Reed says the incident happened about 2 a.m. Sunday while the officer was driving in the downtown area between calls. Reed says the officer heard a noise he initially thought was a rock striking the car. Further investigation revealed what appears to be a single bullet hole in the driver's side door.

No one was hurt and there are no immediate suspects. Police Lt. Ty Trouten told the Elko Daily Free Press Tuesday it could have been random gunfire. But he says they're investigating the most serious crime of attempted murder before eliminating that possibility and reducing any potential charges.
