Scam Targets Idaho Power Customers

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – Your phone rings and a number appears on the screen. You answer it and the voice at the other end of the line says he's an Idaho Power employee. The caller asks for immediate payment, otherwise your utility services will be discontinued. What should you do?

Answer: Don’t believe the voice at the other end. Chances are you’re being scammed.

According to Idaho Power, scammers have been calling customers, telling them to submit immediate payment or power will be shut off in their home. Scammers are even going to the lengths to make it appear that an Idaho Power number shows up on the recipient’s Caller I.D.

“While threatening calls are the most typical scam,” the company says, “Idaho Power frequently sees other scams using its name.”

Idaho Power says customers should know that the company will not:

• Demand immediate payment
• Require payment for a defective meter
• Ask for same-day payment via pre-paid cards (such as the Green Dot MoneyPak)
• Ask potential job seekers for personal information over the phone

The company urges its customers to never share personal information or provide payment to callers appearing to be from Idaho Power. Instead, hang up and call Idaho Power directly at 800-488-6151.
