During my lunch break today, the thought came to me that I hadn't driven down Main Street in quite a while. Just about four to five blocks past the Downtown Commons Ice Rink, which I saw today for the first time, there stood an abandoned building that has no business still standing.

The building is impossible to miss, and is barely upright at the intersection of Fairfield Street West and Main Street. I had to park my car and get out to get a closer look for myself. I didn't actually want to get too close to it, because it looks as if the next strong wind gust could topple it.

I wondered how this building is still being allowed to stand. It looks as if it used to be a hotel of sorts. The front two pillars are leaning in such a manner that it would probably just take a tow rope and a few horse power to yank this portion of the structure down.

The building has pretty much become a hangout for pigeons, and a place to abandon empty beer bottles. The roof appears to be deteriorating at a rapid rate as well.

I'm just wondering what good this building is doing for Main Street. The city spent millions on a massive renovation this past summer--it looks incredible, don't get me wrong--but the fact this heap escaped demolition is perplexing. I pray it doesn't fall on a group of teens some night.

I think the lot is a prime location for a small, gated park, for parents to bring their toddlers. Or, how about a modern arcade? Anything but the depressing, abhorrent pile of glass, wood and concrete that currently is taking up residency.

This needs to be put out of its misery.
