“Don’t Leave Any Witnesses” Includes Goldfish?

Kids these days...where to start :)  I know the youngsters today are much more savvy to the ways of the world than I was at their age - they have everything so easily accessible with the internet and movies.  But just because they "know" about the world doesn't mean they understand.  The 16-year-old kid in this story has clearly watched a lot of crime movies and shows . . . but didn't quite "get" what the fictional criminals mean when they say "don't leave any witnesses."  He and two friends robbed an apartment and the kid killed the three GOLDFISH inside because he didn't want to leave any witnesses.  He had an animal cruelty charge tacked on to his burglary charge.
