CHEW MORE, WEIGH LESS

Are you ready for the simplest bit of weight loss advice you will ever hear? Chew more to weigh less. According to a new Chinese study, people who chew their food more take in fewer calories, which may help them control their weight.

Researchers found that chewing your food 40 times -- instead of a normal 15 times -- causes you to eat almost 12 percent fewer calories.

It seems that chewing tells the brain when to begin eating and when to stop eating. More chewing creates the hormone that reduces appetite, which, obviously, is a great thing when you're trying to lose weight.

If the average person cut their calorie intake by 12 percent, they would lose nearly 25 pounds in one year. So, who out there wouldn't want to drop 25 pounds?

WAYS TO STOP WASTING MONEY

According to Kiplinger's Personal Finance, here are some everyday ways to stop wasting money:

Banking Fees -- Do what you have to do to avoid overdraft fees, ATM fees and even account fees. Banking really should not cost you a penny. They should be paying you in the form of interest.
Pet Care -- Pet-sitting is big business these days. But if your pets are healthy, you can save the $50-a-day boarding fee while you're on vacation by asking a responsible neighbor, friend or family member to help out -- as long as you volunteer to do the same when they're away.
Insurance on Rental Cars -- The rental-car clerk will offer you a collision-damage waiver, which can cost $10 to $20 per day. But as long as the rental is for personal use and you have collision coverage in your own auto-insurance policy, you're covered without this added expense.
Warranties -- The cheaper electronics get, the less these warranties make sense. The same is true with appliances.
Shipping for Online Shopping -- At www.FreeShipping.org, you can find coupons and codes to get free (or discounted) mailing or delivery from hundreds of retailers.
Water -- Why pay for bottled water all the time? Is it actually safer? The truth is, about 25 percent of bottled water actually comes from the same city sources that deliver water to your home.

REALITY TV LINKED TO TEEN COSMETIC SURGERY

According to a new study from Rutgers University, watching reality TV shows makes teenagers more likely to get cosmetic surgery.

While ABC's Extreme Makeover was cancelled in 2007, it was the start of a bunch of different shows, including Fox's The Swan, MTV's I Want a Famous Face, E's Dr. 90210 and Oxygen's Addicted to Beauty.

Researchers found that the impact of reality television also raises many questions about what is being portrayed to viewers as real and a normal part of everyday life.
