How Much Gold Is In A Gold Medal
When I think of the athletes winning a gold medal, I am jealous of their exponential skill compared to mine and I think about the money they could make from all that gold. Turns out those medals are actually more just precious than precious metal. An Olympic gold medal contains about the same amount of gold as your wedding ring. The gold medals that will be given away in London weigh about 14 ounces but only contain a fifth of an ounce of gold. They're actually 93% SILVER. They'd bring about $650 on the precious-metals market. Silver medals would bring $335 and bronzes less than five bucks.
So I guess any hope of paying rent for the month with a 3rd place medal has flown out the window just like my dream of being an Olympic...well, anything!
