HONOLULU (AP) — An Idaho man and his California girlfriend were camping in Hawaii, unaware that police launched a search for them after their families reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to have one of them.

Hawaii County police on Wednesday asked for help locating 21-year-old Kevin Butler, of McCall, Idaho, and 18-year-old Kimberly Linder, of Oakdale, Calif. Linder's mother, Christine Cearley, says the couple didn't have cellphone service while camping in Waipio (WHY'-pee-OH') Valley. When they were later able to retrieve frantic phone messages, they contacted their parents, who notified police.

Cearley says the couple doesn't know anything about the phone call to Butler's mother claiming to have him. Cearley says the couple was to go diving and parasailing Thursday and then cut their backpacking trip short.
