An accident late Thursday evening in Southern Idaho involving a semi-truck and an overpass support pillar has forced the closure of the highway in both directions. Traffic is being diverted, and the overpass will be closed until further notice.

The accident happened a few minutes after 8:45 PM on Interstate 15, near Blackfoot, Idaho. The only vehicle involved was a semi truck pulling an empty milk tank trailer.

In the ISP report, we learned that:

  • A 46-year-old male from Jerome was traveling southbound on I-15 in a white 2026 Kenworth towing an empty milk tanker.
  • The driver of the Kenworth drove off the left side of the roadway striking a bridge pillar supporting the Riverton Rd overpass.

Due to the accident, the structural integrity of the overpass was compromised, and traffic in both directions of the highway and across the Riverton Road overpass has been diverted. Highway traffic is being diverted at exits 89 and 93 to the I-15 Business Loop and US 91.

The driver of the semi was taken by air ambulance to a local hospital, and the Idaho State Police are investigating the accident. Updates on the road conditions can be found on the Idaho 511 app.
