You know, technological advancement is cool, but it's also a creator of headaches we never knew we'd have to worry about. It can be difficult to differentiate what's real from what's not, and that's exactly the premise of a new Google scam.

New Google Scam Has Googled Fooled

Imagine being so advanced that you can fool Google. That's like tricking the sky into thinking it's daytime at nighttime, it's just not easy.

Kidding aside, a developer named Nick Johnson shared with the publication PC Mag that he was "targeted by an extremely sophisticated phishing attack [that] exploits a vulnerability in Google's infrastructure."

For those who regularly ignore their company's optional IT email phishing scam training invites, phishing is "a type of cyberattack that uses fraudulent emails, text messages, phone calls, or websites to trick people into sharing sensitive data, downloading malware or otherwise exposing themselves to crime," according to IBM.

The amazing part here is how this phishing attack was able to bypass Google security systems and appear as if it were actually from Google. How scary is that?

Many of us don't think twice when we get spam emails because it's blatantly obvious, right? There's usually something off about the email address, or a link in the email looks super suspicious... like a dark alley that any of us would avoid. But thanks to tools and resources like AI, scammers are getting smarter and utilizing these tools for their own malicious reasons.

If you're able to, get yourself an authenticator app and make sure you regularly update your passwords. If you're ever unsure about an email being a scam, remain patient and forward it to a legitimate support source like Google Support and have them look it over for you.
