Hot air poppers are fine, but if you’re looking for the best popcorn at home, stovetop is the only way to go.

  • Begin with soaking kernels in a bowl of water for 10 minutes before draining and popping. You’ll get larger and fluffier clouds of grain delight.
  • Use a pot with a heavy bottom with heat that isn’t cranked up too high.
  • Toss a couple of kernels in as the oil is heating. Once they pop, it’s ready.
  • If you tip the lid slightly, the steam can escape and the popcorn won’t lose its crispness.
  • If there’s overflow, just take off the lid and tip over to a bowl, then put the lid back on until the rest of the kernels are done popping.
  • Remember with salt, start with a little. You can’t take it off once you’ve gone overboard.

Making Movie Theater Popcorn at Home

No matter how much we try, it seems like we can’t ever quite get home popcorn to taste as good as movie theater popcorn. If you just melt butter and throw it on popcorn at home, it becomes a soggy mess. How is it so different than what you get at the movies?

The ‘butter’ used upon request at the movies is butter-flavored oil. Clarify the butter and prevent the sad popcorn disappointment. Take 2 sticks of butter and melt them in a glass measuring cup in the microwave. After letting the butter set for a few minutes, there should be 3 layers to the butter. Skimming off the top layer of foam and pouring the clarified butter into another container, the bottom layer can be discarded as well. Voila! 3 tablespoons of clarified butter is good for 10 cups of popcorn.
