I've been reading reports of a spike in exorcisms in the United States since the pandemic began in 2020, and that got me thinking about demonic possession in the state of Idaho. There's only one documented case of an exorcism being conducted statewide in the past four years, and it took place at a home 120 miles northwest of Twin Falls.

Halloween and exorcism go hand in hand. December 26, 2023, will mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the film The Exorcist. It's still regarded as one of the scariest movies ever made and is based on rituals that still take place worldwide every year.

An exorcism is a blessing performed by an ordained priest that is supposed to expel an evil spirit from a human being, home, or object. There are an estimated 125 U.S. priests that are trained to perform exorcisms, according to catholicnews.com. Idaho's last known spiritual cleansing happened in July of 2018, and in a two-bedroom home on Holly Hill Drive in Boise, according to housecreep.com.

The home was formerly the residence of a city priest who was arrested on child pornography charges and died in jail in 2020. A local church arranged for the exorcism, and sold the home shortly after for $250,000, according to boisestatepublicradio.org.

A new film called Prey for the Devil is due to hit theaters just in time for Halloween, on October 28, and deals with the subject of exorcism. The trailer for the movie was released nationwide in July.
