JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - The Jerome County Commissioners' plan to create a "no shooting" ordinance in a heavily used recreation area is slowly but surely taking strides.

Officials met with an attorney Monday to discuss the legalities to put such ordinance in place.

This would apply toward several thousand acres of Bureau of Land Management land leased by the county just north of the Perrine Bridge.

Officials told KMVT the ordinance shall make recreating in the area much safer for users.

"Since I've been a commissioner for several years now, we've had continuous reports of people experiencing the whizzing of a bullet past their head," said Cathy Roemer, vice chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. "I fully support peoples' right to their firearms, but when you have a heavily used area with recreational vehicles, hiking and equestrian horseback riding, we just got to start separating things a little bit."

Not all commissioners were present at the meeting Monday, so the soonest they can make any further decisions will come at the end of the month.
