Much of the Northern United States was treated to a light show from Mother Nature last night. The lights were even seen as far south as The Magic Valley in Idaho.

Forecasting when and where the Northern Lights will happen is not a precise science, but the officials can make pretty good guesses. Last night they had forecasted that the lights would make it to Southern Idaho but not that it would get all the way to the Magic Valley.

Aurora Borealis Makes a Surprise Appearance in Southern Idaho Monday Night

I was lucky to be scrolling Facebook last night when I saw that people from around the world, including Southern Idaho, were posting pictures of the lights. I went outside a few times, and while the glow wasn’t as impressive as earlier this year, there was a nice green and red glow on the horizon that was visible in pictures. I couldn't see it with my eyes and other people in Idaho were much luckier than I was.

Below are amazing pictures of the Northern Lights in Idaho from earlier this year compared to last night. The sight would have been much better if I had been in a darker environment and not in the middle of a well-lit town.

The most active sighting of the lights in recent history happened earlier this year in May. There are reports that tonight we’ll get another chance to see them, but your best bet is to check the Space Weather Prediction Center website and follow the Northern Lights groups on social media. Then, head to a dark place like Craters of the Moon, Lucky Peak Reservoir, or somewhere in the mountains.
