Millions of Americans have memories of toy trains.  You may have received one at Christmas or for your birthday.  Then in following years you received more accessories.  For many, it became not only hobby but a lifelong passion.

Karl Corbin was one of those kids and now decades later a model he has fills his entire Twin Falls basement.  He’s a member of the Magic Valley Model Railroaders.  The organization has long had the most popular exhibit at the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds.  An old building fell into disrepair and now the exhibits are housed in a state-of-the-art facility.

He’s a scout leader and explains the young can also earn merit badges by building model railroads and communities.

On Saturday, December 7th, the doors will open for a Christmas open house.  It starts at noon and you can browse until 4 o’clock.

Karl dropped by our studios today and talked about the event.

He also believes it’s a hobby that can break kids away from computer and tablet screens.  It’s something that teaches patience and skill.  And he explains women are more and more getting involved.  They appear to have the dexterity to work constructing scale models.

You may recall, Karl built a model of St. Edward Church as part of a diorama.  He brought it to our studio this past summer.

If you’re looking for the model railroad location at the fairgrounds, it’s easy to find.  The old caboose has been moved to the front of the building.  To put it mildly, it was a major move.  Even for a short distance.
