Response and containment of the fire required the efforts of multiple agencies. Wind was a detrimental aspect to the severity of the fire, causing unpredictable behavior from the flames. It’s unknown at this time whether the fire was started by lightning or a person, and if by a person, whether it was on purpose or by accident.
In a press conference update, officers revealed that there were 6 officers injured by the fire. One of the officers remains in the hospital after she was caught in an area of flame while attempting to evacuate residents from a burning building. It is believed she is recovering well and will be released in the next few days. Authorities are also uncertain about civilian injuries related to the fire and the total number of structures affected by the fire.
The fire began a little before 7 PM on Tuesday near the intersection of Smith Road and Hamilton Road in Elmore County, according to the Idaho State Police.
