Pixar loves to fall back on tried and true storytelling techniques. Many of their films are buddy adventures about mismatched partners (Woody and Buzz, Sulley and Mike, Carl and Russell) who save the day and learn valuable lessons about teamwork and partnership. And most of those films feature villains who seem like nice, benevolent, caring older dudes who turn out to be — totally evil!

In this new video essay from ScreenCrush’s Ryan Arey, we take a look at the Pixar villain formula, and compare it to the way Walt Disney Animation has traditionally treated its bad guys. The main points of comparison are Lotso from Toy Story 3 and Scar from the original version of The Lion King. (We’ll have to see if the new remake by Jon Favreau changes up anything thing in his character, and in Ryan’s thesis.)
