Bridge Near Twin Falls, ID Closed Indefinitely After Being Struck By A Vehicle
Residents in the Magic Valley have been waiting for Interstate 84 to fully reopen for years. One section that was expected to open before the end of the year, after months of repair to an overpass, might have to be rebuilt.
A vehicle with a load that was too tall struck the underside of the Vineyard Bridge overpass on eastbound I-84 in between Twin Falls and Kimberly. A vehicle hit the bridge in nearly the same location just over a year ago.
Another Vehicle Hit and Damaged the I-84 Vineyard Overpass Near Twin Falls
In a social media post, the Idaho Transportation Department shared the news that a vehicle had hit the recently repaired I-84 overpass on December 8th. The Vineyard Bridge overpass near Twin Falls had only been open for a few days after being closed since being hit last year by a vehicle on November 12th.
ITD shared that the damage would need to be assessed to determine if the bridge would need to be rebuilt.
Comments on the social media post show the frustration the closure has caused and will cause again if the bridge remains closed.
- It’s soooo frustrating!!!! We use that bridge multiple times a day for farming and animals and such, and it was just finished from last year!!!!!
- Hit again? And right after it got replaced…that sucks
Some comments wondered how this could happen, again.
- That’s like an 18 foot bridge??? What the heck are they hitting it with?
- At this point, are there any excavators in the state that haven't hit a bridge? Its not that hard to load them with the boom tucked down.
Other comments offered a solution to hold truck drivers and companies accountable.
- Start fining these trucking companies $100,000.00 a day for everyday a bridge is not back to 100% after an over height vehicle strike!!
- Send bill to the trucking company. Tax payers don't need to be paying for this kind of negligence.
As of right now, there hasn’t been an update on the status of the bridge. We’ll update this story once we hear from the Idaho Transportation Department.
