Walmart Ends Ammunition Sales for Handguns and Rifles

In a letter to employees, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon says the company will stop selling ammunition commonly used in assault-style weapons and handguns, and will also stop the sale of handguns in Alaska, the last state it sells them in.

According to People, the retail corporation will also ask customers to stop openly carrying guns inside their stores, even in states with open carry laws like us here in Idaho.

On Tuesday, McMillon issued a statement asking politicians to "move forward and strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger." He added, "We must also do more, as a country, to understand the root causes that lead to this type of violent behavior.”

The CEO's letter reveals growing security concerns among Walmart brass after a mass shooting in a Texas store in August left 22 dead, and indicates the chain intends to be more proactive in pushing for safer gun laws, including support for reauthorization of the assault weapons ban.

The CEO concluded, “We’ve also been listening to a lot of people inside and outside our company as we think about the role we can play in helping to make the country safer. It’s clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable.”

Whether you agree with Walmart's new policies or not, you have to at least agree that it's refreshing to see a company want to enforce change.
