We have two vacuums in our house (not counting the dogs) and both have lately been sucking at sucking. One is old that we got for our wedding 10 years ago and the other is a pretty new Kirby. On Friday my wife took them both to Sawtooth Vacuum and Water Conditioning and they gave her an easy tip on making any vacuum last longer.

Don't put the vacuum on its lowest roller bar setting. Most vacuums have the option for raising and lowering the roller brush. In our house we always have it set as low as it will go because in my mind that means it will pick up more dirt. Not true. Others have their vacuum set low because they like the lines that it leaves in the carpet. Being too low restricts the airflow lessening the suction - but even more importantly it also decreases the life of the roller bar. On both of our vacuums the roller bar bristles were less than half as long as they should be. We had worn them out by putting them so low! They told my wife to set the vacuum to its highest level, turn it on and slowly lower it until you could hear the bristles touching the ground, and that is the optimal vacuuming setting.

Oddly after the fix - it made me excited to try out the vacuum just to see it work again.
