Another national restaurant chain has announced closures across the United States, so what does that mean for California?

Most of the closures in 2024 have been in states on the East Coast with only a few closures in the central states and California is the one state on the West Coast to lose a restaurant.

TGI Friday's Closes One of the Last Remaining Restaurants in CA

The once popular restaurant chain, TGI Friday’s, announced they are closing 3 dozen restaurants in the US in 2024 and dozens more in Europe. One of the US locations was in California. TGI Friday’s has been struggling for months with stores across the US closing and in some states, TGIF no longer exists. Idaho lost their final Fridays last year and California lost the Fresno location at the beginning of 2024.

So, why are we talking about TGIF closures again in September? TGIF has resurfaced on news feeds in the last few weeks as Finance Buzz updated one of their old stories about the closures, Restaurant Dive did an update on the corporate acquisition failing, and TheFW shared info on the future of the restaurant chain this week. Thankfully, there were no new mentions of California closures. Even with the Fresno closure in California, there are still more than a dozen restaurants in the Sunshine State for fans of flair and food. But TGIF Fans in Fresno still have to travel to get theirs.

Less than a decade ago, the Fresno location got a facelift, losing the classic red and white striped roof and signage for a modern look and the removal of TGIF in the name.

Seeing a national restaurant chain struggle and close locations raises questions about the future of the remaining 16 TGI Friday’s locations in California. Will any of them close in inevitable future closure announcements or is California safe from the corporate chopping block?
