JEROME, Idaho (KLIX) – Authorities in Jerome County said Friday that one person died after crashing a vehicle into a canal on Monday.

Elizabeth Muro-Sanchez, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Jerome County Sheriff George Oppedyk.

The single-vehicle crash happened in the early morning hours on Monday in the area of 2300 East 550 South in Jerome County. When deputies arrived on scene they found a Dodge pickup truck submerged in the canal.

A passenger, Benjamin Nava-Madera, was unharmed, according to the sheriff.

Oppedyk said at the time the canal was running about four miles per hour and the water temperature was around 42 degrees. The water at the crash location was 8 to 10 feet deep.

Several agencies helped on scene, including Air St. Luke’s, North Side Canal Company, Jerome County Search and Rescue, and First Segregation Fire Department, along with their dive team.

“Without the assistance of First Segregation’s dive team and the above listed first responders, the recovery would have been much more difficult to complete,” Oppedyk said in a statement.

He said alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact the Jerome County Sheriff’s Detective division at 208-595-3310.
