An event tonight at a Treasure Valley library will help girls 7 to 18 learn more about the art of telling computers what to do.  Just show up, and the coding class is free.

STEM fields get a lot of emphasis in schools, and it seems companies in those areas are always looking for the best and brightest in the career world too.  As the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields keep booming, opportunities for women will continue to grow.  If your daughters are STEM-inclined like mine, now is the time to help them pull up a seat at that table, and tonight is a slam dunk chance.

The Ada Community Library - Victory Branch will host tonight's "Girls Who Code" class and Boise.org says anyone can attend.  And it doesn't look like you have to register ahead of time.

The library says, "Girls build character and coding skills as they learn, plan, build and celebrate together to create projects they care about. Younger children can learn to code unplugged, with optional online components. Teens will use self-guided tutorials."  At the class tonight they'll teach teamwork, communication, functions, variables, conditionals, and loops from the Girls Who Code Curriculum.

Some research shows that STEM fields can be male-dominated, but efforts are underway to change that and encourage more women and girls to set their sights on those types of careers.  If you're curious about what it might take, go check out tonight's workshop!

For questions, contact Derek dramos@adalib.org.  The Ada Community Library is at 10664 W Victory Road in Boise, and the class if from 6:30 to 7:45 pm.
