BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A bill that explicitly allows the Bible to be used in public schools passed its final legislative hurdle Monday, despite concerns about whether the measure is legal.

According to the legislation, the Bible can be used for reference purposes in subjects like literature, history, music and world geography in public schools, but not scientific subjects. Schools are already allowed to reference the Bible, but this legislation would make that permission clearer in state law.

Republicans Reps. Lance Clow, of Twin Falls and Fred Wood, of Burley, joined House Democrats in opposing the measure. Clow argues the measure is not backed by the Idaho Constitution and could spark potential lawsuits.
