Boise Parents Pivot from School Schedules to Summer Activities

As summer in Boise kicks off, tens of thousands of families are making the stressful transition from school schedules to summer activities. And according to data from Uber, parents are prioritizing flexibility more now than ever before.

Striving for Better Balance

In fact, 85% of Uber drivers cite flexibility as their chief reason for partnering with the company in the first place. Those with kids say Ubering allows them to "better balance their work and family priorities."

Back in 2015, one driver revealed her primary motivation for partnering with Uber was the ability to get her two multi-sport kids to-and-from practice and events. When you think about it, it's genius; sort of like those moms who work at pre-schools to get their kids free tuition/education.

But what's a regular, non-Uber driver parent to do? Who are we going to call when carpool is full, our work schedules get hectic, and our kids still need ferrying around town? Is it legal for Idaho parents to schedule Uber rides for their kids?

Not yet. On May 22 this year, Uber rolled out their teen accounts in 14 cities across the country. While Boise didn't make the program's initial launch, we're hopeful the new feature is on its way to the City of Trees. When it arrives, kids ages 13 to 17 years-old will be able to hail their own Uber rides!

Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi writes the company's shift in policy is intended to help families "manage the craziness" of carting kids around.

We’re introducing teen accounts on Uber—built for parents and caretakers of 13-17 year olds to save precious time with peace of mind.

Boise parents can look forward to monitoring the rides their teens request and sophisticated rideshare features like PIN verification and destination-lock. As always, all Uber drivers undergo background checks, and only the highest-rated Uber drivers will participate in the program.
