
‘Hard Candy’ Made Idaho Audiences Squirm 20 Yrs Ago
The 20 year anniversary of the release of one of Hollywood's most uncomfortable psychological thrillers is approaching. The film won numerous awards overseas, but in America, didn't sway audiences until years after when it became available for rental.
There are few films I've seen in my life that have had as big an impact on me than one that released to American theaters in the spring of 2006. Low budget doesn't always mean disappointment. Those I know who have seen it, love it.
Although it wrapped shooting the previous year, Hard Candy hit theaters in the United States in April of 2006. The movie starred Patrick Wilson and a 17-year-old Elliot Page, who identified as female at the time the film was in production and went by the name Ellen Page.

The film is considered controversial by many due to the fact it centers around an online predator and pedophile. In June of 2023, Page released his memoir, 'Pageboy,' which detailed an alleged sexual assault suffered by the young actor by a male crew member. Page received worldwide praise for his performance in the role.

The film's runtime is one hour, 43 minutes, according to Movie Insider. It received an 'R' rating for 'disturbing violent and aberrant sexual content involving a teen, and for language,' according to Movie Insider.
Other movies turning 20 in 2026 include The Illusionist, Talladega Nights, Little Miss Sunshine, The Zodiac, Borat, and V For Vendetta.
