We've seen extremely peaceful protests happening over the past few days here at the capital in Boise. That hasn't been the case in other cities around the country where protests have turned to riots, fires, looting and shootings.

But even last night, we saw a peaceful protest turn scary when a gun was fired. People were scared. It turned out that the gunfire was accidental, but it could've been so much worse. There were counter-protesters at the capital last night when a gun was fired. It could've turned ugly, like it has been in other cities.

So what do you do if you're protesting, something happens and you get tear-gassed or pepper-sprayed? Lifehacker has these instructions on what to do if it happens.

"The most important thing is this: get away from the gas and flush your eyes with fresh water. If you have contacts in, remove them. Milk may work, but there’s no evidence that it’s better than water."

"Remove contact lenses—ideally with clean hands—if you have them in. Do not rub your eyes. (Do not rub or touch anything, if you can help it.) Blink repeatedly."
