SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The 92-year-old L. Tom Perry, one of the highest-ranking leaders of the Mormon church, has been diagnosed with cancer.

The church said Friday morning that Perry will begin radiation treatment to treat cancer discovered in his thyroid gland.

Perry was hospitalized earlier this week with breathing difficulty.

Perry is the second-most senior member of the high-level Mormon governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He is also the oldest of the group.

The church also said that 86-year-old Richard G. Scott, another member of the Qourum, was hospitalized Thursday night with gastrointestinal bleeding. Scott is resting now after the bleeding was brought under control.

Scott was named to the Qourum in 1988 and Perry in 1974.
