Saturday December 10th the Herrett Center is having a special viewing for the total lunar eclipse, and the event starts Friday night at the Faulkner Planetarium.

  • The moon will be full as it begins to set in the west early Saturday morning, Dec. 10.
  • For astronomers, the eclipse begins at 4:34 that morning, well before the rest of us have a clue what’s going on.
  • Mere mortals will begin to see the Earth’s shadow cover the moon starting at 5:46 a.m./
  • The eclipse becomes total at 7:06 and reaches its fullest point at 7:32. The moon will set at 7:56 – so all this is going to happen pretty low on the western horizon.
  • The Herrett Center has a way for you to celebrate and learn more about the eclipse all night starting at 8:30 Friday, Dec. 9
  • The Herrett is holding a ‘Snore and Explore’ science camp-in for families. It’ll start with make-and-take astronomy sessions, followed by a show in the Faulkner Planetarium, and then everyone can sleep over throughout the Herrett galleries.
  • At 4:30, campers will get a wake up call so they can trundle into the Faulkner Planetarium and begin watching the eclipse on the 50-foot dome.
  • Those who want to bundle up in the fresh morning air are welcome to go upstairs to the Centennial Observatory to look through the telescope.
  • The cost is $25 per child and $12 for adults. Please register in advance at the Herrett gift shop or online at Herrett.csi.edu
