Easter is Sunday and most kids (myself included) are eagerly awaiting their baskets filled with candy. That candy is usually in addition to any candy you may acquire during Egg Hunts. Many parents are worried about their kids having that much sugar and are now looking for healthier alternatives. The National Retail Federation (NRF) has come up with a few healthy and unique alternatives to candy.

Play-Doh:  Every kid loves playing with it! Most of them do forget to put the lids back on, but until it dries out it is a lot of fun!

Plastic eggs: They can be filled with a number of things from stickers to temporary tattoos and even money. The NRF suggests filling them with glitter. I personally like the idea of glitter because it would be hilarious when they first open the egg and glitter drops out all over everything...maybe that is actually a bad idea.

Spring-themed basket: Just fill the basket with yard work accessories and your kids will be ready to be your slaves...or just dog a bunch of holes in the yard. This is actually a really good idea for kids as a learning experience. Include seeds, shovels, and gloves to plant flowers or veggies. Watching them grow will last longer than any chocolate bunny.

Summer-themed basket: Same idea as the Spring Basket - except less educational. Fill the basket with flip-flops, sunscreen, a hat, beach towel, and even a new swimsuit.

Magazines: Back in the day there were many cool magazine subscription and today - there are more! Find out what your kids like and get them a subscription to a relevant magazine. Plus it may get your kid to read more.

While your kids may have candy expectations this year, you could get them started on a path of candyless baskets by picking one of the alternatives with a small amount of candy this year and next year go all in. Have fun and Happy Easter!
