License Plate Dubbed as ‘Racist’ is Now Available in Idaho
I was at the DMV in Twin Falls less than 3 months ago when I found out that there was a petition to sign to make the Gadsden license plate legal in Idaho.
Now, just halfway through May, I saw my first one on a truck driving around town and it looked pretty awesome.
Idaho’s Racist License Plate is Officially Legal Now
At the time of our first writing about the Gadsden license plate becoming an option in Idaho, there was debate about whether it would be appropriate.
To some, the Gadsden flag and motto ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ symbolize freedom and perseverance, while to others, they represent racism. To me, it's one of the greatest Metallica songs.
An interesting thing about the Gadsden license plate’s journey to reality is that in March, when I was at the DMV, they were talking about the petition that needed to be signed to get the proper number of signatures. But, the statute for Idaho regarding the Gadsden license plate, referred to as the ‘Don’t Tread on Me License Plate’, says it went into effect on January 1st, 2025.
That’s more than 2 months before I was asked to sign the petition.
Either way, the plate is legal, and you’ll be seeing more of them on Idaho roads now. The plate costs $35 in addition to regular registration fees.
