Idaho just unveiled a new license plate option for residents to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The gem state has been pumping out new plates over the last year, including two of my favorites, the black plate (black with white letters) and the yellow plate (the Gadsden Flag and Motto plate).

I think the America 250 plate looks good. It’s simple and patriotic. You can see it below, plus get info on how to get one, how much extra it will cost, and how to personalize it.

The New America 250 License Plate is Now Available in Idaho

The new license plate was a surprise to me when it was announced. I hadn’t seen any announcements about it being planned or released. A similar thing happened with the Gadsden plate, where I only found out about it because I was at the DMV getting different plates for a car. If you want to express patriotism on your car, there are a variety of license plates you can choose from. You could even count the Gadsden plate as patriotic if you wanted. But among them all, is this new ‘America 250’ plate the most patriotic of them all?

There is an extra fee for the specialty plate, with some of the proceeds benefitting the Idaho Heritage Trust.

How to Get the New America 250 License Plate in Idaho

You can get the new plate in-person at the DMV or online. It’s listed as the ‘HERITAGE’ plate when searching in the specialty plates online, not as America 250. The plate will cost you the regular registration fee, a specialty plate fee ($35 for the first year and $25 for renewal), and an additional fee for a personalized message.

When choosing a personalized plate message, remember that there are rules, and your plate can get denied if you get too crazy, extreme, dirty, offensive, or vulgar with the letters.

36 of the Worst Idaho License Plate Rejections From 2025

We have to admit that we don't understand all of these, but the ones that we do really make us question why someone would want these on their car. This isn't even all of them - we were sent 28 pages with 25 to 30 submissions on each page of rejected personalized plates from 2025.
