Target Shooting is No Longer Allowed at This Southern Idaho Site
Finding a place to target shoot outdoors in Idaho just got a little more difficult.
Due to safety concerns, the Idaho Bureau of Land Management has implemented an emergency closure of a popular recreational shooting area in Southern Idaho.
Idaho BLM Closes Indian Springs to Recreational Shooting
In a press release earlier this week, the BLM made the announcement that recreational shooting will no longer be allowed at Indian Springs. The location is a popular outdoor target shooting location but is also an area where bikers and hikers can be seen, plus there are homes and livestock in the area. BLM has identified an alternate location for target shooting near Filer.
There have been reports of homes, livestock, people, and equipment being hit by bullets. The area, south of Twin falls near the base of the South Hills, will close on September 20th. 3,700 acres of land will be off-limits, but south of the closure will remain open for recreational shooting. Hunting is not affected by the closure, only target shooting.
This map shows the area that will be closed:
The Bureau of Land Management suggests a closed gravel pit south of Filer as an option for safe recreational shooting. The location is 5 miles west of Highway 93 at the N. 2000 E. and E. 3500 N. junction.
Over the last 4 years, there have been at least 33 instances of near misses reported to the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office in the Indian Springs area.
