For anyone who has traveled along Highway 18 in western Oregon during the fall months, you may have zipped right through an area near the town of Grand Ronde without noticing something very cool. Nighttime travelers most certainly wouldn't have seen what an area lumber company did to greet visitors to their sleepy town.

Spring arrived in the United States more than eight weeks ago. This means the next opportunity to catch a glimpse of a now 13-year-old tradition will arrive approximately five months from now, which gives people plenty of time to make arrangements to visit an area just a few miles northwest of Salem known as Smiley Face Hill.

Motorists passing through can get a good glimpse of the amusing tree formation during daytime hours, but to enjoy the full experience of just how neat this annual site is, an aerial view provides a much better look.

In 2011, Oregon's Hampton Lumber experimented by planting a patch of Larch trees among a mountainside of Douglas Firs to see if a fun idea could come to fruition, according to a story shared by foxweather.com. The company has four locations throughout the state, and every fall for the past 13 years employees have been enjoying the fruits of their labor, along with others from all across the world.

Smiley Face Hill can be located three and a half miles southwest of the town of Willamina. Motorists passing through can get a good glimpse of the amusing tree formation during daytime hours, but to enjoy the full experience of just how neat this annual site is, an aerial view provides a much better look.

Next time I'm headed to Seattle to visit my daughter, I'll choose October to travel to Smiley Face Hill and get a look for myself.
