The United States Postal Service has chosen today as the start of the first of 2 rounds of changes to how they’ll deliver certain mail from now on.

Phase one starts today, April 1st, 2025, and the second phase will begin on July 1st.

The changes will not affect all mail deliveries; some mail will have faster delivery standards, and others will have a slightly slower standard.

The fact sheet for explanation of the changes calls this ‘refining service standards’ and explains that the mail affected will be: First-Class Mail, Periodicals, Marketing Mail, Package Services (Bound Printed Matter, Media Mail, and Library Mail), USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, and Priority Mail Express.

First-Class mail will maintain the 1 to 5 day delivery range while the range of time for delivery of ‘end-to-end Marketing Mail, Periodicals, and Package Services are being shortened’.

With these changes, the USPS claims that all mail and package deliveries will benefit and have more reliable service.

These changes are part of the ongoing Delivering for America plan, which began in 2021 and is a 10-year plan to reduce costs and improve customer experience.

Even those who don’t frequently use the USPS to send mail no doubt receive mail daily or weekly in their mailbox from the USPS. Even big delivery companies, like Amazon and Temu, rely on postal workers to deliver some packages.

While the USPS attempted to simplify the explanation of the changes in their fact sheet, they may still be difficult to understand.

An article from Newsweek broke down the changes to First-Class mail (as there will be 3 levels of delivery standards) and what the new zip code numbers will mean.
