On December 9th, 2021 a 14-year-old boy and his two friends were crossing the street in a crosswalk near Canyon Ridge High School. Two of the teens were able to get across the road but 14-year-old Adrian Brandell was struck by a vehicle. His mother gave us an update on his progress.

Vanessa Brandell stated that Adrian is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Boise but they are hoping they can get him transferred closer to home. He has siblings that haven't been able to see him and are staying in Twin Falls. Adrian has 3 fractures to his skull with a majority of the injury to his fright frontal part of the brain and his MRI showed damage to other areas as well, like the part that controls the ability to wake up. Adrian is able to breathe on his own and is no longer under sedation.

"I should be chasing him out of the kitchen because he is trying to eat all of the fudge."

According to his mother, Adrian will have a tracheotomy to help with his breathing put in today, Tuesday, December 21st. The doctors are hopeful because he is young and healthy. According to her update yesterday on her Facebook page, Adrian is a little more aware, nodding to answers and squeezing people's hands when asked. He is a bit more alert so that is a good thing, but he is still struggling with a possible sinus infection.

According to his mother, Adrian will have a lot of physical therapy to undergo but they will not know more until he is more awake and aware, that is when doctors will be able to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Vanessa said that Christmas is her favorite holiday and things with the family have been extremely hard. They are hoping to get Adrian into an inpatient rehab facility to be closer to home for Christmas but that looks unlikely. We can be hopeful though.

Adrian and his 15-year-old sister are very close and she, along with his other siblings, has been struggling. With Adrian in the PICU he is unable to have visitors under the age of 18.

Vanessa said it breaks her heart that there is a possibility she will not be with her in-laws this Christmas, they haven't decorated their home or created their gingerbread house on Christmas Eve like they do every year. She said she should be chasing him out of the kitchen because he is trying to eat all of the fudge, and that won't happen this year. The one thing she wants for Christmas is her baby boy to wake up.

For those wishing to send get-well cards, Christmas cards, or whatever you can send it to 195 Washington Street North Twin Falls, Idaho 83301. You can also donate to his gofundme page.
