Christmas is coming to Idaho. Sure, it’s still a few months away but some stores already have Christmas decor on their shelves and Yellowstone National Park is taking it to the next level. The park just celebrated Christmas in August, and this isn’t the first time.

Why Does Yellowstone National Park Celebrate Christmas in August?

Christmas in July isn’t a new thing to hear, but in August, that’s odd. And there isn’t even a really good reason, at least not one that everyone agrees on, that Yellowstone would celebrate Christmas in August. But, we don’t actually need reasons to celebrate and have a party. Still, each year on August 25th the lodges in Yellowstone decorate and celebrate Christmas early.

Some of the theories and stories about the holiday tradition include one from Yellowstone National Park stating that there’s a legend that during a freak August blizzard years ago visitors decided to celebrate as if it were Christmas.

Another logical reason the celebration happens in August is explained in a Tweet by Destination Yellowstone where they remind us that August 25th is the date the National Park Service was founded.

On Instagram, the Yellowstone National Park Lodges shared excerpts from a 1967 employee newspaper talking about the fun and surprise the event is.

Other websites have tried to explain the reason there is a Christmas in August celebration in Yellowstone too, but they can’t seem to agree on the reason or the dates that the fabled events happened. Since today is the 26th, we missed the celebration for 2022 but put it on your calendar for 2023 if you need an August fix of Christmas cheer.
