There are two solar eclipses coming up that will cross the United States, but neither of them will happen directly over Idaho. The closest chance we have to see one in Idaho will be on October 14th of this year, and you’ll have to take a short drive to get there.

In 2017, we were lucky in the Magic Valley in that we were able to see the solar eclipse from our own homes. That eclipse was awesome and makes me want to make the drive south to see the next one.

3 Cities Near Twin Falls Where You Can See The 2023 Solar Eclipse

If you look at the map from NASA on the projected path of the solar eclipse in October 2023 you’ll see that Idaho gets completely missed except for maybe a tiny section of the southwest corner. But even at that point, you won’t see the eclipse as anything special. To get the full effect or even a small effect, you’ll have to travel to Nevada. Jackpot won’t be good enough for a proper viewing, you’ll need to hit up Ely, Elko, or Winnemucca. Wells will be on the edge of the eclipse viewing area so you’re better off driving deeper into the state. If you like the idea of being in a more remote area, you can find a road anywhere along the path on the map below or camp out in a smaller town like Baker, Spring Creek, or Battle Mountain.

The solar eclipse is happening on October 14th, 2023, and will be an Annular Solar Eclipse. That means it will look like a ring of fire in the sky as the moon blocks out the majority of the sun. The eclipse will last about 5 minutes and should be visible across Nevada between 9:20 and 9:30 AM Pacific time - in Idaho time it will happen around 10:30 AM because of the timezone difference.
