Does Listening To A Book On Tape Count As Reading [POLL]

I was having a conversation with my friend yesterday and he told me he was about to finish reading some cool book - that he'd been listening to on CD. I informed him that listening to it doesn't count as reading since you're not exercising your reading skills...but as I thought about it, he knows just as much about the book as someone who actually read it. This got me thinking even more, if listening to the book counts as reading then shouldn't they use that in schools more? On the bus would be a great time to play a book over the speakers and kill two birds with one stone. The kids get to school and they read a book on the way.
