Statistically Idaho Ranks Poorly in Preventative Breast Cancer Care and Screening

For years, Idaho has ranked poorly when it comes to preventative screening for breast cancer. Less than 70 percent of Idaho women who should be screened for breast cancer have had a mammogram. The rate is getting worse too, especially among younger women in Idaho according to cancer research stats.

Across the United States, the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased about 1 percent each year overall. The rate is higher among younger females. Could that be due to more screenings happening and therefore more cases caught or is cancer actually on the rise?

How Does Idaho Rank in Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention

In a recent study, Idaho ranked 22nd for reported cases of breast cancer between 2017 and 2021, just above the national average. Idaho also ranked slightly above the national average for breast cancer related deaths.

According to Idaho Health and Welfare, Idaho ranks 50th for preventative breast cancer screening.

In July of 2025, Idaho law mandates coverage for enhanced breast cancer screening, requiring coverage for a yearly screening to women believed to be at higher risk of breast cancer.
