I will admit that at times while driving on the freeway I am guilty of driving faster than the posted speed limit. The crazy part is that most of the time it is just to keep up with other cars on the road! When I lived down in Las Vegas, if you weren't driving 90 mph then you were the slow car on the road. You know what's a good idea?  People driving FASTER! The Texas Transportation Commission just approved a plan to open a 41-mile toll road that will have the HIGHEST SPEED LIMIT in the U.S. - 85 miles-per-hour. I think this is going to turn into a case of "you give them an inch" and they'll be driving 100 mph before you know it.

The highway will run between Austin and San Antonio.  There's no word on when the construction on the road will be done.

Right now there are highways in west Texas and Utah that have 80 mile-per-hour speed limits, but America doesn't have any roads with NO speed limit, like the autobahn in Germany.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is against this new highway.  A spokesman said, quote, "The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up."

Is a higher speed limit a good idea?
