It’s no secret that Twin Falls goes to bed really early. One of the first things we noticed when we moved here was that when the sun goes down it seemed like everything closed. We went downtown on a weeknight to get food and everything was closed. This was 15 years ago, and there have been changes, but some want the nightlife in Downtown Twin Falls to go even later.

Would Twin Falls Be Better With These Two Changes?

There are 2 petitions floating around right now that would improve the nightlife in Twin Falls for some. Both of them are based around alcohol with one aiming to extend the time that bartenders can serve liquor and the other wants Twin Falls to implement a complimentary public transportation service on weekends.

Petition to Extend Last Call in Twin Falls

On the website, you can find the petition for Twin Falls to start allowing the sale of liquor until 2 AM. Twin Falls County currently has the cut-off at 1 AM, while Idaho does allow for counties to extend that time for an additional hour. Idaho Statutes 23-927 is an interesting read as far as the sale of liquor on certain days and during certain times:

23-927. HOURS OF SALE OF LIQUOR. (1) No liquor shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away upon any licensed premises, and all liquor not in sealed bottles must be locked in a separate room or cabinet during the following hours:
a. Sunday, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas from 1 o’clock A.M., to 10 o’clock A.M. the following day; provided however, that on any Sunday not otherwise being a prescribed holiday, it shall be lawful for a licensee having banquet area or meeting room facilities, separate and apart from the usual dispensing area (bar room) and separate and apart from a normal public dining room unless such dining room is closed to the public, to therein dispense liquor between the hours of 2 o’clock P.M. and 11 o’clock P.M. to bona fide participants of banquets, receptions or conventions for consumption only within the confines of such banquet area or meeting room facility.
b. On any other day between 1 o’clock A.M. and 10 o’clock A.M.
c. When any city or county has any ordinance further limiting the hours of sale of liquor, by the drink, then such hours shall be fixed by such ordinance.
(2) A county or city may, however, by ordinance, allow the sale of liquor by the drink on a Sunday, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving, and may also extend until 2 o’clock A.M. the hours of the sale of liquor by the drink.

Petition to Offer Free Late Night Transportation in Twin Falls

The other suggestion was sent to me in an email and has been presented to the Twin Falls City Council previously. In the petition, the City Council is being urged to consider offering a free public transportation option in Twin Falls between 2:30 and 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. The email states:

This strategy would not only enhance community safety by reducing drunk driving incidents but also provide an additional income source for public transport employees. It's a balanced approach designed to stimulate economic growth while prioritizing public safety.

This issue will be presented to the City Council at the upcoming meeting on Monday, May 15th.
